Sports Music
They're recognizable. They inspire us. They motivate us.
Sports movie theme songs are the songs that stick with us. When we hear the music, we remember the movie. We get transported back to the scene where it started playing.
When you hear "Eye of the Tiger" you automatically remember Rocky training in the gym in LA. When the song "Gonna Fly Now" plays, we remember Rocky running through the streets of Philly with all the kids following him. Truly inspirational moments in the movie. And the music only made the movie more memorable.
There are more musical moments in sports movies. The music from The Natural that makes us smile and long for a simpler time. The music from Brian's Song brings tears to our eyes.
Music can actually make or break a movie. It was the music that made Brian's Song even sadder. Without that music, the movie would not have been as sad. Nor would it have been as good of a movie.
The same can be said for the Rocky movies. The music made us want to cheer even harder. We remembered the words to "Eye of the Tiger" because it was both a good song, but it was also part of a good movie. If we work out to the song, "Gonna Fly Now" we add little boxing punches because it reminds us of the movie.
If we don't like particular movie, we're probably not going to like the theme song. But for the most part, we generally like the movies because of the inspiration they bring. Thusly, the song brings that same inspiration.
I get a little choked up when I hear "This Used to be My Playground" and remember the movie "A League of Their Own." I have the same reaction when I hear the theme from Brian's Song. The music takes me back to the feelings I felt when I watched the movie.
Music does play an important role in any movie, but in sports movies they lend the inspiration we all want to have in our everydays lives.
