Field of Dreams is truly an inspirational movie. One that reminds us to follow our dreams no matter what anyone says.
This is a fictional movie about a real life place. There really is a baseball field in the middle of a cornfield in Eastern Iowa. But, as with all movies, the story surrounding the field is not as exciting as the movie.
Field of Dreams stars Kevin Costner as Ray Kinsella. He is a man who has a corn farm and barely making ends meet. One night while out in the field, he hears a voice declaring what is one of the most recognized lines from any movie "If you build it, he will come." In a dreamlike haze, he sees the lights from a baseball field and believes the voice is telling him to build a baseball field. Not knowing who will come and much to the chagrin of his brother-in-law, who's bank holds the mortgage to the farm, he plows his corn under and builds the baseball field.
Once the field is built, the players from the Chicago Black Sox scandal show up to play on his field, along with several other players from various teams. Including Ray's long deceased father, John.
As the story unfolds, we learn that the "he" was Ray's father. Ray and his father did not have a good relationship and this was basically a way to mend fences that did not have a chance to be mended before he passed away.
This movie is truly inspirational in that we learn to follow our dreams, no matter how far-fetched they may seem. Because of it's inspiration, it was nominated for an Academy Award in the category of Best Picture of the Year in 1989.
The movie has an all-star cast which includes Amy Madigan as Ray's wife Annie, Timothy Busfield as Ray's brother-in-law Mark, Burt Lancaster as "Moonlight"Graham, and James Earl Jones as Terrance Mann. Each of these actors portray their roles so well you almost believe they are real people. In fact, this movie is so good that you almost beleive it is a factual story.
This movie is definitely among my favorite sports movies. I truly believe in following your dreams no matter what anyone says about it. I truly believe in not ever giving up on those dreams. This movie is about that belief. It touches everyone who's ever watched it.
